- melodramatic tales of intrigue and romance won millions of
- readers; in Par, Cornwall, England. The gothic imagery and
- polished storytelling of Du Maurier's 24 books were often
- perfect fodder for a plot-hungry Hollywood. Among her works made
- into films: Jamaica Inn (1939), Rebecca (1940) and The Birds
- (1963), all directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
